Shadowhunters Debriefs: Interview with Brian Hui and The Makeup Team

Welcome to Shadowhunters Debriefs, an insider’s look into the making of Shadowhunters. This collaboration with ShumDarioNews options interviews with the writers and crew behind this award-successful, fan-favourite Tv show. This week’s debrief is with Brian Hui (Make-Up Head of Department), Amanda O’Leary (Key Make-Up), and Verity Fiction (Assistant Make-Up). They opened up about who was the most fidgety throughout make-up, the usefulness of packing tape, the collaboration behind the characters’ evolving seems to be, and the emotional last day of filming.

You’ve created numerous gorgeous make-up seems to be throughout the seasons. Do you’ve gotten some favorites?

Brian: I just got here on in Season 3 so a few of the characters were already established, but I used to be ready to put my own spin on their seems to be. Clary has her regular ‘mission’ look, but we acquired to have some enjoyable for particular occasions like her rune ceremony, date night time, and club appears to be like. As Clary’s journey continues in 3B, her look will evolve.

Brian: Lilith was such enjoyable make-as much as do. ‘Black Lilith’ in episode 3×01 took about two hours; initially with 4 of us airbrushing Anna Hopkins with MAC black airbrush make-up, stippling her body with Bluebird Gloss Sealer, after which once we were shooting, we lined her body with a product known as ‘Ultra Crude’ which supplies an oily tar finish. That very same day, we had to wash her up entirely and switch her into ‘glam Lilith.’ Our costume designer, Shelley Mansell, dressed Anna in the most incredible gowns, so we went full-out glamour for her make-up. ‘More is more’ was our mantra!

Which products did you run out of the most often?

Brian: Quite a lot of FX sealers to prolong the wear of the runes and, if you would imagine it, packing tape! Lots of packing tape, which worked on many of the actors to remove their runes quickly. We additionally went via our fair share of blood. Fresh blood, dark blood, mouth blood…you name it, we had it!

Amanda: Gosh, it was such a busy present and there have been all manners of make-up. But I’m gonna agree with Brian here, tape! We turned consultants on packing tape – which brands worked higher on some actors, which ones were stickier, which technique labored better, and so forth.

Also with [Harry Shum Jr.], I went thru a number of nail polish remover! The polish and conventional removers had been fairly laborious on his nails, however I found this all natural remover (Karma Naturals) that was just wonderful.

What was your everyday routine when coming to set?

Brian: We’re generally in wherever from 1.5 to 2.5 hours earlier than the crew so we will have the actors prepared for blocking out the scene. Depending on what actors are in later that day, that determines which of the team go to set initially to keep up the solid for the primary scene. Each day is different, which can decide whether or not or not I need to attend meetings for upcoming episodes, breaking new scripts down, and keeping up on our continuity notes. My team is amazing (Amanda, Verity, and Jen) and that i delegated duties to them as properly. The film world is lots of ‘hurry up and wait,’ but we all the time had work to do whereas we waited!

Whose make-up took essentially the most time to get performed?

Brian: With the exception of [Lilith in 3×01], I would say the Seelie Queens and Meliorn were the longest make-ups. We would e book 2.5 hours for hair, make-up, and prosthetics. The Seelie Queens concerned being wig-capped; wigged; vine tattoos utilized to the face, arms, and chest; after which the leaves painted with gold, seelie ear ideas glued, and then the magnificence make-up.

Amanda: I would have to say [Emeraude Toubia]. She all the time had a lot occurring, and always had these stunning outfits that showed plenty of pores and skin, and meaning plenty of runes! Isabelle had pretty much a signature look, however we each love make-up so much that we had been always trying for methods to make it better.

There was one make-up on Emeraude that I assisted our prosthetics make-up artist, Adrian Stansfield, with that took a couple of hours. He did such an amazing job along with her. It’s in an upcoming episode, so I can’t say an excessive amount of about it right now.

Verity: For me, the seelies definitely took the longest. Brian already talked about Meliorn; we also have a couple of upcoming new seelies that had been very long processes. I might often tag-workforce with Adrian [for the prosthetics], to get the job done quicker. We had a really easy routine down by the end. One of the longer make-ups was the day when our Seelie Warrior (from 3×11) arrived with a shaved face and i needed to create pretend stubble for him from scratch, using a way known as ‘hair laying.’ We also shot the scene that day the place he was shirtless and being tortured, so together with all his normal make-up and the stubble, he needed to have vine tattoos on his chest and arms utilized.

Who would you say was probably the most troublesome about sitting nonetheless for his or her make-up?

Brian: [Laughs] No one was ever difficult! However, Jace with lengthy sleeves on versus Jace shirtless added a whole lot of extra time. [Dom Sherwood] has his personal tattoos which I had to cover first and then apply about 23 runes afterwards. Usually, Verity and I would tag-workforce to get him processed quicker if we needed to see all of his runes.

Amanda: Harry, for positive! That man is always dancing, always shifting. Harry doesn’t like to sit nonetheless. I needed to give you some artistic ways to get his make-up on straight. I had a yoga wheel he might stretch with. Sometimes he wouldn’t sit at all; I’d just do his make-up standing up. But he’s so lovely, he would always stop when i wanted him to.

How did you keep track of the rune positioning?

Brian: We saved a really detailed rune/prosthetic switch bible to maintain the continuity of the runes. It additionally included any prosthetics that we did, like Jordan Kyle’s wolf scratches. [Kat McNamara] and that i had the system down pat and we would put the runes on collectively just to be time efficient.

Amanda: We had a reasonably elaborate system for the runes. Along with our invaluable bible, there was a filing system, and an ordering system; we had been alway slicing runes out. All of us remember in our beginning days thinking we would never grasp these runes, and after we realized we knew them all by heart – their meanings and who received what where – we have been super pleased with ourselves on that day!

Do you’re employed with the writers, administrators, and showrunners to help include a character’s look? How a lot route do you could have?

Brian: Meetings, conferences, and extra conferences! Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer are superb showrunners, and Matt Hastings was my go-to individual on-set for any questions I had. On Anna’s first day as ‘glam Lilith,’ she went to set to rehearse. I hadn’t gotten full approval yet for her look, and that i received a message that Matt had a make-up observe which was ‘10% more.’ Oh, I can positively do 10% extra! [Laughs]

Amanda: There was all the time a robust collaboration between writers, administrators, showrunners, and us. It was really important to all of us that we by no means forgot the books, however that we stayed true to our story.

Verity: We work very intently with the writers, producers, administrators, and showrunners as nicely because the actors themselves to determine each of the seems. Firstly of every season, and every time a brand new character is launched, we do what are referred to as ‘camera checks.’ That is where hair, make-up, and costume do a trial run of the looks we’ve got discussed for that character and they go in entrance of the digital camera. Then that footage is proven to the large bosses in L.A. and they offer suggestions. If modifications are requested, we then implement the changes and the ultimate look is determined before the first day we film with that actor. It’s a extremely cool collaboration process which means everyone is pleased and there are not any surprises on the day [of filming].

After the present became more mature and darker for Season 2, we observed adjustments in a number of the characters’ appears to be like. What were your thoughts behind that?

Amanda: That was all very intentional, aging them up a bit, to maintain consistent with your complete shift of the present going to a darker and more harmful place. Our heroes are coping with some large issues and not everybody survives. We wanted our appears to be like to replicate that.

Magnus is one of the characters whose look changed the most over the seasons. What was the process and thinking behind that?

Amanda: After i came to the present in Season 2, I actually wanted Magnus. There were so many issues I wished to bring to his character. Little did I know what a journey it could be and how much I might fall in love with both Harry and Magnus.

I really needed to indicate Magnus’ darkness, his knowledge, and carry the richness of his wardrobe through to his make-up. I wished him to be sharp, chiseled, and on level. Certainly one of the most important adjustments from Season 1 to 2 was his goatee, and we (Harry and that i) fought to maintain it in Season 3. Also in Season 2, I had a purple liner (Stila Magnificent Metals in ‘Black Tanzinite’ disc.) that I used that I cherished on Magnus. We determined to drop it in Season three because Magnus was more settled in his life with Alec, he didn’t must be so flashy.

Did the script have an influence on what make-up you were going to use on the characters? For example, when Magnus was struggling together with his nightmares in 2×13, what decided the usage of pink eyeshadow?

Amanda: Changing Magnus’ make-up was a manner for us to show his feelings. 2×13 was kind of the start of that for us. Magnus was always the stoic and wise warlock; it was a way to point out his humanity. In Season 3, we use this a lot more, particularly in 3B.

In 3×10, Magnus misplaced his powers, [and they had been] virtually like one other sense. And in any case these centuries, he has not solely change into habitually dependent however he [additionally] took his powers as a right. He struggles to seek out his method with out them, and we tried to reflect that in his make-up. There’s even a scene in 3×11 the place he tries to do his make-up without magic – not very efficiently, I’d add. We used different tones of gray eyeshadows as a substitute of black, sometimes we changed his nail polish and we even got rid of it at one level! It was really enjoyable to discover that journey by way of make-up.

Do you have got a favorite look for every foremost character?

Brian: I loved anytime I obtained to come up with a Clary ‘event’ look. Kat and I’d get so excited once we discovered a second for a new make-up! There’s about three [distinct] appears to be like for her in 3B, however you’ll have to attend and see!

Amanda: Yes! There’s with Magnus, but I can’t let you know that but; it’s literally close to the tip of the sequence! As well, I always had the most effective time with Emeraude making Isabelle as flawless as we may get her.

Emeraude Tobia and Amanda O’Leary. (Amanda O’Leary)

Are there any appears to be like in 3B that you simply were significantly pleased to work on?

Brian: I liked that all of my ladies had fully totally different looks. From Clary, Lilith, Helen, and each Seelie Queens, they all had distinct looks. I additionally acquired to do some really enjoyable prosthetic FX work as nicely (some things that will likely be revealed in 3B!).

The evolution of Jonathan’s look was great fun, too. Luke Baines and that i labored collectively on the location of his runes. Since he’s obsessed with his sister, Clary, and feels a rivalry with Jace, we selected a mixture of the two of them. For instance, Clary has her Heal (Irazte) on her neck and Vision and Protected on her left clavicle. We placed the same runes on Jonathan but in different sizes and barely askew (to break up his body) to point out how unbalanced he was. For Jace’s runes, we placed them on Jonathan as a mirror picture and slightly off (like the Speed and suppleness runes), nearly as if he’s taking a look at Jace and making an attempt to measure as much as him. Fun little Easter eggs!

Verity: Yes, however I can’t talk about them just yet 😉 .

Did the actors have any input on their hairstyle and make-up?

Brian: Definitely, which is why I love to collaborate with the cast on their looks. If now we have time, we’ll get the actor in for a hair/make-up check. Other times, the actor is likely to be solid just a few days before capturing, so I’ll usually attempt to have a couple of ideas to present to them beforehand. One enjoyable idea I had for Helen (Sydney Meyer) was to place two runes on her arm, Angelic/Love to foreshadow the relationship between her and Aline. Sydney beloved the concept so that made me comfortable!

Amanda: Actors at all times have opinions about their characters; it’s probably the greatest elements of this job. People coming along with ideas and making some art. Writers provide you with all these weird and fantastic ideas and so they go down the chain, and we try to discover all of them. Sometimes they work and generally they don’t. And typically they end up on our Wall of Unused Script Ideas!

Verity: Make-up and hair may be an enormous help to an actor and be the factor that takes them to the next stage in turning into their character. So it’s essential to involve the actor in the process. They’ve developed the character of their head and infrequently instances have already thought about how they’d look earlier than sitting in our chairs. I love the process of discussing the seems and serving to create the character with my head of department and the actors. It’s so rewarding to have the, ‘Oh, there they are,’ moment when a make-up is full.

If you could create any character’s makeup look again, is there something you would do in a different way? Or, alternatively, is there anything you’ll have cherished to have experimented with more?

Brian: The only factor I want I had accomplished was to have given Underhill (Steve Byers), more affectionately generally known as ‘Underpants,’ an excellent neck rune. I gave him these nice ones on his forearms, however more often than not, his sleeves had been down.

Amanda: If I might go back and change something, it would most likely be the Iron Sisters (from Season 2). We simply actually didn’t have the time with them to really develop who they had been and discover out the place we may go with them.

Episode 1×10 is ready in an alternate universe. Most of the character appeared very totally different from what the fans had been used to. What were your thoughts whereas creating those alternate seems to be?

Verity: This was my favourite episode to work on in Season 1. I loved the idea of other universe seems and we actually acquired to play. Fun reality: I was the inspiration for the ‘nerd Izzy’ look. Emeraude and that i mentioned lots of ideas for nerdy appears to be like as I was the resident ‘nerd girl’ on the time. Ultimately, she asked me to do her make-up how I did my very own make-up. I was also tremendous into a aspect braid at the time, so the hair division decided that would be a fun hairstyle for Alternative Universe Izzy to have.

How did working on Shadowhunters differ from your other tasks?

Brian: I’ve been within the enterprise for over 20 years, so I’ve labored on a lot of interesting initiatives. What I loved about engaged on Shadowhunters from a make-up perspective is that our staff obtained to do a little bit of the whole lot: magnificence, tattoos (runes), fantasy, prosthetics, blood-and-gore…a make-up artist’s dream! I also have so as to add that this cast and crew are such a family, undoubtedly a Shadowfam! I said it earlier, but I had the most superb team on Shadowhunters.

Amanda: We’ve got change into a household. We all grew to become friends, real friends – cast, crew, and the production workforce. We hung out collectively on weekends, and most of us all talk to one another to this day. All of us thought we could be collectively for a long time.

Verity: Shadowhunters actually was a dream make-up job, as Brian stated, we actually received the prospect to do each form of make-up you could possibly think of. The challenges were frequent sufficient that it was never boring however not so frequent that you just were a ball of stress every day. Because we shot for almost 10 months out of the 12 months, the cast and crew really grew to become a tight-knit household. Shadowhunters, I think, will at all times be a profession spotlight for me.

If you could go back to your first day of engaged on Shadowhunters, what advice would you give yourself?

Brian: Breathe! You will determine the rune placement eventually.

Amanda: If I may go back, I believe I’d try and persuade everyone to keep Valentine alive. I loved to hate him so much!

Verity: Take pictures, of the whole lot, everybody. All my experiences on the present are fading memories now and i just wish I’d taken extra photographs.

What was an important thing you gained out of your experience working on Shadowhunters?

Brian: The friendships between the cast and the crew are what I’ll hold pricey to my coronary heart. And of course, the followers…I can’t inform you how wonderfully overwhelming the love and help from Shadowhunters meant to us. We usually work a 70-eighty hour week in our little bubble and hope that the tip result is nice. Well, Shadowfam, you made all of the onerous work worth it.

Amanda: The power of the angels, the Shadowhunters fans. They’re by and far one of the incredible things I have witnessed in my career. Their passion and dedication has brought me to tears on more than one occasion. I want we could have saved the present for them.

Verity: Shadowhunters was my first huge full-time union show and i gained my union membership because of it. I’ll ceaselessly be thankful to my Season 1 head of division for trusting in me and bringing me onto the show. Each of my division heads each season taught me so much. Every experience has been a precious lesson that I will take with me for the remainder of my profession.

What was your favorite memory from working on Shadowhunters?

Brian: There are so many wonderful reminiscences! One of my first memories was going to the stunt room within the studio to satisfy Kat. She was understanding and got here up to me saying, ‘Hi, I’m Kat! Sorry I’m sweaty!’ and gave me the most important hug. That’s the Shadowfam in a nutshell!

Paris…ah, Paris! As you noticed in 3×12, the show went to Paris and I used to be lucky sufficient to be requested to go. We had such a wonderful time capturing there and had some unbelievable meals as effectively.

My most emotional recollections can be filming the collection finale. It was bittersweet, however I felt so fortunate that we received to work with each other once more. When they stated, ‘Cut…and that’s a sequence wrap,’ there wasn’t enough tissues for all of the tears. I’ll say that we partied laborious in the Institute that night!

Verity: Literally too many to recount. I keep in mind that we laughed a lot on that show. A few of my favorite recollections embrace nearly all the solid and crew going to Archers Arena for [Isaiah Mustafa’s] birthday one 12 months. Our wrap events were at all times killer. Getting rune tattoos for real with Dom and among the make-up/hair team in Season 2 (don’t consider Dom; he copied my pinky talent rune tattoo, not the other approach ‘round!). Jamming in the band room at lunchtime and creating the ‘very real’ band with [Alberto Rosende], ‘The Fiction Contradiction.’ [These] are some of my most favorite life memories, not just Shadowhunters memories.

But in the end, I feel my most most most favourite reminiscence – and one which I will cherish for the remainder of my profession – happened on our very last day once we completed capturing Episode 22 of Season 3. Our 1st Ad, Siluck, and Todd Slavkin gave a speech thanking everybody for their work on the present, and as I seemed around teary-eyed, I noticed every single particular person within the room tearing up, too, even among the older crew who’ve seen so many shows’ closing days. And that i remember thinking everybody beloved this as a lot as I did, and it actually was one thing particular.
